RIX Riga Airport is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltic States. Thanks to the successful development of infrastructure, the growth of the Latvian national airline “airBaltic”, a competitive tariff policy and taking advantage of its geographical location, RIX Riga Airport aims to become a regional air traffic hub in Northern Europe.
This ambitious goal can be achieved by strengthening and increasing direct connectivity from Riga, maintaining a high number of transfer passengers, offering passengers modern services and a high level of service, streamlining processes, introducing innovation and promoting development of the aviation industry, retaining and attracting high-quality specialists.
According to the operating strategy of RIX Riga Airport until 2027 “Skrejceļš 2027”, the turnover of the airport is planned around 77 million euros but the total investment in the period of operation of the strategy will exceed to 247 million euros. It is expected to reach nine million passengers and 48,500 tons of air cargo per year by 2027.
Airport's future strategy also envisages the development of an airport city concept that not only offers aviation services but also creates business ecosystems, provides excellent connections and offers new opportunities for both citizens and non-aviation business dvelopment.
In the future city center of RIX Riga Airport there will be airport's new 30,000-square-meter passenger terminal with a capacity of up to 12 million passengers per year, which will be connected to the Rail Baltica railway station, creating single and multimodal transport hub. Around it, the airport business city "RIX Airport City" will be developed with hotels, office centers, logistics, air cargo and e-commerce warehouses, creating development opportunities for various types of business as well as providing new jobs.
In 2023, RIX Riga Airport handled 6.63 million passengers. The largest number of passengers so far that was served at RIX Riga Airport - 7.798 million (2019).
