On May 17, 2019, during the Astana Economic Forum 2019 in Kazakhstan's capital Nursultan,  Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Uldis Reimanis signed a co-operation protocol with  the Chairman of the working group for Kazakhstan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Industrial, Scientific and Technical Co-operation, Vice-Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development - Berik Kamalijev.

The leaders of the Latvian-Kazakh Transport working group welcomed the long-standing co-operation in the field of road transport and Eurasian transit traffic during the meeting. Pointing out the potential development in the area of transportation, U. Reimanis informed that in November 2018, two test container train routes from China to Latvia were organized through Kazakhstan. The representatives of both countries agreed that priority should continue to be given to developing new rail connections, the effectiveness of which will be determined by common cooperation.
